DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
"I AM CONNECTED AS MUCH WITH PEOPLE & OUR PLANET - AS WITH THE FINAL DESIGN OUTCOME"
As a designer for over 20 years, I strive to work on projects that make a difference for people and community in need. I have volunteered my time with local and international organisations including Oxfam, One Laptop, OPEN IDEO,
Salvation Army (Street TV) and have been a member of Greenpeace for the last 10 years.
"Designers have a gift and look at the world in a different light and use design thinking to solve challenging problems others may simply ignore."
Michael Strelan
New and existing technologies play an important role in designing and developing, but most importantly - designing for the user and experiencing the impacts of change* is what defines me as a designer.
I design for the present with the future in mind. As part of this process - 10 years ago I created an online TV channel myeco.tv to support my design thinking. A platform that allows me to engage with new technologies and processes
to help me better understand our changing world through the eyes of design. This idea is a great example - and in many ways defines me as a designer.

MANAGEMENT + LEADERSHIP
Working with teams large or small, I treat everyone with same kindness and ability to achieve their personal best. I am very professional and proud of my achievements, both as a designer, manager and leader.
As a manager, my focus is to have a well defined brief, as a leader I aim to inspire my team to do their very best. I’m considered from my peers as a ‘leader’ and share mutual respect from my team and colleagues.
In 2002 I created my own design studio ‘Oxygen’ - This was the benchmark in defining my work ethics and expectations as a designer, manager and leader. 10 years on - I now work for one of the worlds leading entertainment companies - have formal training in management and lead an award winning design team. I’m a hands on designer, and work closely with creatives, producers and senior management to brainstorm,
problem solve and present challenging ideas.
To stay fresh and focused on new ways of looking at problems I strive to create environments for my design team to perform their very best.
We have been a part of several design challenges, including a personal 10 week design challenge, Getty Images film challenge, personal best challenge and team outings to events and exhibitions.

TESTIMONIALS
As a leader, I have worked with People + Culture to develop an internal learning and development space called Foxtel Labs, allowing all creatives within the business to further develop their skills. Courses include, camera training, drawing for production, filming, editing and online training. The idea is called ‘Open Source Learning’ which inspires all team members to also create and lead their own courses. This training platform provides an ‘hands-on’ approach and invites all departments from the business to share and develop their ideas.
"The launch of this great new L&D initiative ‘Foxtel Labs’ that one of our most talented creatives – Michael Strelan - has been developing the last 18 months. Congrats to you Michael!
These are Sydney based short courses that focus on our creative teams specifically, and are a great initiative that will hopefully inspire & develop our teams to bigger & better creative things"
Lauren Sheens - Head of People & Culture – Foxtel Networks
"It has been a real team effort, from Michael’s creative vision of creating a themed BBQ learning space,
Thank you very much for pulling together to deliver our pilot session today. The feedback sheets are overwhelmingly positive with everyone scoring a 9 or 10 in recommending it to a colleague to attend"

I'm always looking at simplifying processes and streamlining solutions. As part of my continued support in making it easier for our teams - I have also designed an online camera booking and inventory system using
Google Docs to manage and track equipment, bookings and training. http://www.foxtelgear.com.au / username / password / foxtel
